GetYourGuide vs Viator: Porto’s top six experiences

The two big tour marketplaces often sell the same tours from the same local operators. What differs is price on the day, cancellation terms and the details. Here is how to compare them, experience by experience.

Some links on this page are affiliate links; if you book through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How it works

Search for almost any Porto tour and two names come up: GetYourGuide and Viator. Both are marketplaces. They do not usually run the tours themselves; they list experiences from local operators, take the booking and handle customer service. Many Porto operators list on both, so the same Douro day trip or cellar tour can appear on each site at different prices, with different review counts and sometimes different cancellation terms.

Rather than declare a winner, this page puts the six experiences our readers book most often side by side, with the facts you need to compare and a one-click search on each site. Where booking directly with the operator is simpler, we say so.

The practical advice is the same on both: find the operator’s name on the listing, then check the same operator on the other site. Compare the final price for your date and group (not the “from” price), the cancellation deadline, the meeting point, and what is included. If the product is identical, book where the terms suit you best.

Read the cancellation line, every time

“Free cancellation” is set per listing and is not universal. Some Douro tours with lunch, private tours and ticketed entries are non-refundable. The terms shown at checkout are what applies.

02Douro Valley day trip

The UNESCO-listed Alto Douro wine region is a couple of hours upriver, and a guided day usually combines a quinta visit and tasting, lunch and an optional short river cruise around Pinhão or Régua. Compare: group size, how many quintas (two is plenty), whether lunch and the boat are included, and how long you actually spend in the valley versus on the road.

Prefer independence? CP’s Douro line trains run along the river from Porto (most direct services leave Campanhã); our Douro day-trip guide covers train, tour or drive.

03Six-bridges river cruise

A short loop on the Douro beneath Porto’s bridges, usually in a traditional-style river boat. Rota do Douro’s own Cruzeiro das Pontes lasts 50 minutes and leaves from the Gaia quay (Avenida Diogo Leite); its site listed €18 for 2026 when we checked. Compare: departure point (Ribeira or Gaia), duration, and whether a drink is included.

This is one you can easily buy direct or at the quay; see Rota do Douro.

04Port lodge tour and tasting in Gaia

A guided visit to one of the Port houses in Vila Nova de Gaia, ending with a side-by-side tasting. Compare: whether it is one lodge or a multi-lodge “wine walk”, which wines are poured (tawny and LBV, or a premium aged tawny flight), and the group size.

Many lodges sell visits on their own websites; our Port cellar guide explains how to choose one.

05Food and market tour

Three to four hours of tastings that replace a meal: petiscos, cured meats and cheese, a francesinha or bifana, pastries and a glass of wine or Port, often with a stop near the restored Mercado do Bolhão. Compare: the tasting list, the number of stops, dietary options and the group size.

06Livraria Lello tickets or tour

The neo-Gothic bookshop with the crimson staircase uses timed tickets, and the ticket value can be deducted from a book. Resellers mostly sell walking tours that include Lello entry. Compare: whether you get a fixed entry time, and whether the tour adds anything you want.

For entry alone, buy from Livraria Lello’s official site; it is usually the simplest option.

07Old-town walking tour

Two to three hours through the UNESCO-listed historic centre: the Sé, São Bento’s azulejos, Ribeira and the Dom Luís I bridge. Compare: route (downhill is kinder), group size, whether it is a private option, and the guide’s focus, whether history, architecture or food.

QuestionsFrequently asked

Is GetYourGuide or Viator better for Porto?

Neither is better across the board. Many Porto tours are listed on both by the same operator; compare the final price for your date, the cancellation deadline and the inclusions, then book where the terms suit you.

Are tours on GetYourGuide and Viator run by the same companies?

Often, yes. Both are marketplaces that list local operators. The operator is named on each listing.

Should I book Livraria Lello through a tour site?

For entry only, the official Livraria Lello site is usually simplest. Tour sites mostly sell walking tours that include entry.

How long is the six-bridges cruise in Porto?

Rota do Douro’s Cruzeiro das Pontes lasts 50 minutes and leaves from the Gaia quay.
